"The secret of happy living is not to do what you like, but to like what you do."
Founder of Schlecht Hatchery
We are done taking orders for this season. Thanks to everyone for another Great Year!
family-owned business, which started out as a hobby, is celebrating
over 50 years. We may not be the largest or the oldest hatchery, but
without our customers, we would have been gone years ago.
Inside you will find
a nice selection of high quality chicks and ducks at reasonable
prices. Because we are unable to sex some breeds, those will be available
in straight run only. Keep in mind that the roosters do make great fryers.
On hatch days, Tuesday,
we are usually on a tight schedule with many birds and orders to fill.
Because we are trying our best to get our orders shipped out as quickly
as possible, we are not able to be tied up with lengthy phone calls.
We apologize for the inconvenience, even though we love to hear from
our loyal customers.
We are a family operation. We try and keep our prices as low as we can, but still have to try to maintain a profit. We maintain high-quality, healthy baby poultry as well as our adult flocks. Our close association with the post office ensures a safe delivery. Schlecht Hatchery is a member of the Bird Shippers of America.
We would like to
thank those of you who have purchased from us in the past. We appreciate
your confidence and loyalty! We look forward to serving your poultry
needs for years to come!

Would just like to thank your family for the fast delivery, 50 healthy chicks, and the service. You provided the fastest delivery I have ever experienced with poultry and every single chick was active and healthy. Look forward to using your service many times in the future.
I just wanted to say I did get my chicks, and only because I harassed the post office quite a bit. If I had been patient, I would not have been able to get them until Friday afternoon. I ended up having to drive to the main hub in Lansing, MI to intercept them this evening - they were going to keep them over night, then do a few more stops before they came to my post office sometime tomorrow. I think they were tired of me calling to see if they were there yet.
I have to say, even though I'm not impressed with the post office (two years ago, you shipped on Tuesday, and my post office called Wednesday morning to pick them up), I am SUPER impressed with the strength of my chicks! There was one dead chick in the entire batch of 105 or so, and all the rest were very vocal and active when I got them in their brooding pen. They were quick to drink the drench water mix (electrolytes and sugar for chickens, mixed in the water) - I only had to dip a few beaks and they caught right on without even having to dip all of them. So far, every chick has been active, eating and drinking.
Once again, I'm impressed with the vigor and stamina of your chicks. I was expecting to have a fairly high mortality due to the cold weather here and the delay, but only one chick out of over 100 is very, very impressive. I'm splitting this batch with two friends who have never raised meat chickens, and I know they will be happy with them as I will.
Thank you again for having such excellent birds, and I will order from you again, always.
I have purchased chicks, ducks and guineas from Etta and her family for around 8 yrs. I have NEVER lost a single bird. They are healthy, well-started and just as I ordered, each and every time. I have ordered from other hatcheries and had to buy way more than I needed. I would never buy from anyone else now that I have dealt with the best. They are friendly, very knowledgeable and the greatest of people to talk to about their critters. Thanks Etta and "family". My pullets that I got from your last week and very healthy. Growing like little weeds. I have nothing but praise for you and your hatchery!!!!! Love your website.....Judy Wilcox
